The Oxford University Philharmonia was founded in 1992 by students and for students. One of the principal differences between this orchestra and many others across Oxford is the fact that it is run and conducted entirely by students. It is known for its sociable, friendly atmosphere which accompanies a termly concert of a consistently excellent standard. Applications to the orchestra are to either be directed through the Oxford University Music Society which auditions players at the start of each year or directly with the manager or relevant fixer for other terms. We rehearse once a week on Wednesdays in the Denis Arnold Hall in the Music Faculty on St. Aldate’s, though the number of rehearsals tends to increase slightly on the approach to each concert. The concerts are usually held in 7th week in the Sheldonian Theatre. The orchestra
performs one solo concerto per year
in Hilary term, the auditions for which are held,
again amongst students, in Michaelmas term. A
new conductor and leader are chosen annually beginning
their appointment in Trinity term. OUPhilharmonia is also one of the few orchestras in Oxford which has been abroad on tours. In Easter 2007 the orchestra went to Vienna and played in the Musikverein, where they played Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, Janacek’s A Cunning Little Vixen Suite and movements from Smetana’s Má Vlast.
